Gutters are priced by the linear foot, plus downspouts, plus anything that has to be fixed behind them. These are the ranges we see across York, Hanover, Red Lion, Dallastown, Dover, Shrewsbury and the surrounding townships going into 2026. They are ranges on purpose. Material costs have moved several times since 2020, so treat any number older than a year or two as out of date.

What actually moves your number up or down

Two houses with the same footprint can differ by more than a thousand dollars, and it is almost never the aluminum itself. It is access, complexity, and what is hiding under the old gutter.

When we walk a property, these are the things we are pricing in your head before we ever write anything down.

• Height and access. A single-story ranch in Manchester Township is ladder work. A three-story rowhome in York City with a tight alley behind it is a different job entirely.
• Corners and miters. Every inside and outside corner is a hand-cut, sealed joint. A simple rectangle is cheap per foot. A house with dormers, bays and roof kick-outs is not.
• Downspout count and where the water has to go. Adding drops is minor. Routing water around a patio, a driveway, or into existing underground drain lines is not.
• Fascia condition. Older homes in Spring Grove, Glen Rock and East York frequently have soft fascia behind a gutter that has been overflowing for a decade. That has to be sound before anything is hung on it.

• Job size. Very small jobs carry a minimum, because a crew, a truck and a roll-forming machine cost the same whether they run 30 feet or 200.

5-inch or 6-inch, and which material makes sense here

The most common upgrade question in York County is gutter size. A 6-inch K-style gutter paired with 3x4 downspouts moves roughly 40 to 50 percent more water than standard 5-inch with 2x3 downspouts, and it clogs less readily because the outlet is bigger. It typically adds a few dollars per foot.

Six-inch is worth it when you have a large or steep roof plane, long uninterrupted runs, heavy tree cover, or a history of the gutter sheeting over during summer downpours. It is usually not necessary on a modest ranch with short runs and open sky.

On material, seamless aluminum is the right answer for the overwhelming majority of homes in this county. It does not rust, it comes in a wide color range, and it is formed to length on site so the only seams are at corners and outlets. Copper is a genuine option on historic properties in York City and on higher-end builds where the look matters, and it will cost several times aluminum. Vinyl sectional gutter from a big-box store is cheap for a reason and does not hold up to freeze-thaw cycles here.

Guards, repairs, and what you can skip

Gutter guards are the single biggest variable in a York County quote. A good micro-mesh system installed correctly can genuinely end routine cleaning on an oak-heavy lot. Not everything needs replaced, either. If your gutters are the right size, hung straight, and the metal is sound, resealing corners, re-pitching a sagging run, adding a downspout or replacing failed hangers is often a few hundred dollars instead of a few thousand. Full replacement makes sense when the gutter is undersized, the fascia is failing, or the existing sectional gutter has more joints than it has good runs.
